Testimonials

“Joanna’s hideout is unique, reachable only by boat.
So nothing much to do, no worldly distractions, what a blessing! I just loved contemplating, drawing, writing from that large veranda overlooking the Hawkesbury River. With that water just below, ebb and flow, and these dark green hills on the horizon. Feeling connected with a timeless space, feeling so much part of the ground, the water and the sky.
The house is comfortable with plenty of light, simply but comfortably furnished”.

"It was an absolute pleasure to undertake a self-directed art residency at Papillon Retreat over a week filled with art making, bushwalks, riverside sunsets, solitude and silence. The tranquil surroundings allowed the outside world to slip away as I focused my time on formulating new projects and completing a small number of works I already had in progress. In between this work, I found myself scurrying up the escarpment, exploring and painting scenes in the bushland. The grass trees and angophoras scattered between vibrant orange sandstone made for brilliant compositions of native Australian flora that were present in the area. I hope to be back again soon and create more art inspired by this idyllic place! Thank you Joanna for providing this space for artists."
